You must be at least 14 years and 8 months old by the first day of class, so please keep this in mind when you register.

A student must be 14 years and 8 months to qualify for Driver Education classes.  Segment I is offered before the driver begins supervised driving and requires a minimum of 24 hours of classroom instruction, a minimum of six hours behind-the-wheel (BTW) instruction, and a minimum of six hours of observation time in a training vehicle.

Class time does NOT include driving sessions.  These sessions are scheduled within the first three day of the class and may be chosen by the students outside of the regularly schedule class time. Scheduling is flexible.Only after the student successfully completes the Segment I knowledge test and has demonstrated adequate skills for the Segment I behind-the-wheel assessment, then a Segment I certificate is issued (Level I Graduated Driver License or GDL ).

The driver education Segment I certificate of permission is not a permit to drive and cannot be considered a driver’s license.  After completing Segment I, the student and parent must go to a Secretary of State branch office to apply for a Level I driver’s license.

Segment II is taken a minimum of 90 days after a student receives his or her Graduated Level I License.   Segment II is offered after the driver has acquired at least 30 hours of driving experience with at least two hours of night time driving.

This is a six-hour class, covering defensive driving skills and specifics about taking the road test.  Segment II is a State mandated class in which KDS will schedule over the course of three days for two hours a day.  There is no driving involved for Segment II.
